Franklinton, Louisiana

The Washington Parish School Board met in special session on the above date with the following members present: President Harold Smith, Karl Bickham, Juanita Barker, Holly James, Susanne Jones, Hayward Boone, Richard Thomas, Bruce Brown, and Freddie Jefferson.  Absent: None.

 

Agenda Item #1 - Call to order.

 

The meeting was called to order by President Smith.  He welcomed guests and news media present.

 

Agenda Item #2 - Invocation.

 

The invocation was given by Bruce Brown.

 

Agenda Item #3 - Pledge of Allegiance.

 

Agenda Item #4 - Appoint board member for District 4 to serve until the special election to be held in March, 1999. 

 

It was moved by Harold Smith, seconded by Karl Bickham, that the Board appoint Richard Ned Thomas, Jr., to serve as School Board Member, District 4, to serve from the beginning of the new term on January 1, 1999, until the special election on March 27, 1999, at which time the vacancy in District 4 will be filled.  Motion carried unanimously.

 

Agenda Item #5 - Administer Oath of Office to all board members.

 

William J. Burris, 22nd Judicial District Court Judge, administered the Oath of Office to all board members.

 

Superintendent Fowler informed the Board that the two days schools were closed due to Hurricane Georges (September 28 & 29, 1998) must be made up.  Therefore, his recommendation will be to have students attend school Monday, February 15, 1999 (1 day taken from Mardi Gras Holiday), and Friday, April 2, 1999 (1 day taken from Spring Holidays).  If any additional closings are necessary, adjustments will be made during the Spring Holidays.  He stated he had polled the principals, and they unanimously concurred with his recommendation.

 

Agenda Item #6 - Hear presentation on accountability.

 

Mary M. Jones, Supervisor of Elementary Instruction, presented an overview of the school and district accountability program.

 

Agenda Item #7 - Consider a motion to adjourn.

 

It was moved by Freddie Jefferson, seconded by Hayward Boone, that the Board adjourn.  Motion carried unanimously.
