Franklinton, Louisiana

            The Washington Parish School Board met in special session on the above date with the following members present: President Bringier H. Barker, Karl Bickham, Hayward Boone, Susanne Jones, Harold Smith, Richard N. Thomas, Bruce Brown, and Freddie Jefferson.  Absent: Holly James.

 

            Agenda Item #1 - Call to order.

 

            The meeting was called to order by President Barker.

 

            Agenda Item #2 - Invocation.

 

            The invocation was given by Bruce Brown.

 

            Agenda Item #3 - Pledge of Allegiance.

 

            Agenda Item #4 - Discuss and/or take appropriate action on contract buy out of Robert Coleman.

 

            Following a report from School Board Attorney Wayne Kuhn, it was moved by Harold Smith, seconded by Susanne Jones, that the Board allow Mr. Kuhn and Mr. Coleman’s attorney until June 27, 1996, the next regularly scheduled board meeting, for negotiations to be finalized.  Motion carried unanimously.

 

            Agenda Item #5 - Discuss and take appropriate action regarding advertising in-parish for a Superintendent.

 

            Following discussion, it was moved by B. H. Barker, seconded by Freddie Jefferson, that the Board advertise in-parish for a Superintendent, to include the following qualifications: administrative experience, Master’s Plus 30, must have served as a principal, computer literate, and certification in accordance with Louisiana State Department of Education Bulletin 746.  Motion carried unanimously.

 

            It was moved by Freddie Jefferson, seconded by Bruce Brown, that the Board hold a public meeting on June 27, 1996, at 7:00 P.M., at Franklinton High School Cafeteria, in order to have input from the community regarding the superintendent selection process. Motion carried unanimously.  The regularly scheduled school board meeting will be held June 27, 1996, at 5:30 P.M., at the School Board Office.

 

            It was moved by Susanne Jones, seconded by Hayward Boone, that the Board advertise in The Era-Leader (official journal) and Daily News for three (3) weeks beginning June 19, 1996, and ending July 12, 1996.  Motion carried unanimously.

 

            President Barker asked Anthony Triola, Acting Superintendent, to update the Board on the Varnado High School insurance claim.  Mr.Triola stated that Richard Phillips, insurance adjuster for the Board’s insurance company, will meet with Mr. Triola and Sam Fauntleroy next week to try to agree on a settlement.  He further stated that the private insurance adjuster will not be involved in this meeting.

 

            The Board agreed that the committee meeting scheduled for July 8, 1996, can be held at Varnado High School, since the community meeting has been scheduled for that same date.  Sam Fauntleroy, Architect, John Norris, the Board’s insurance consultant, and Adren Raybourn, Director of Finance, will be asked to attend the community meeting.

            President Barker recognized Betty Durr, who had requested to address the Board. Ms. Durr expressed concern regarding a rumor she heard that some board members had already chosen a superintendent.

 

            Since two (2) board members will be out of town on July 11, 1996, a regularly scheduled board meeting date, it was moved by Hayward Boone, seconded by Karl Bickham, that the July 11th board meeting be moved to July 9, 1996, at 6:30 P.M..  Motion carried unanimously.

 

            Agenda Item #6 - Consider a motion to adjourn.

 

            It was moved by Harold Smith, seconded by Freddie Jefferson, that the Board adjourn.  Motion carried unanimously.
