The Washington Parish School Board met in special session on the above date with the following members present: President Bringier H. Barker, Karl Bickham, Hayward Boone, Holly James, Susanne Jones, Harold Smith, Richard N. Thomas, Bruce Brown and Freddie Jefferson. Absent: None.
Agenda Item #1 - Opening of meeting.
The meeting was called to order by President Barker. The invocation was given by Bruce Brown. President Barker welcomed all in attendance.
It was moved by Karl Bickham, seconded by Freddie Jefferson, that the Board add to the agenda a request from Ms. Stephanie Williams to address the Board regarding Demonette tryouts at Franklinton High School. Motion carried unanimously. President Barker stated this item would be placed on the agenda following Item #6, as Item V.
It was moved by Hayward Boone, seconded by Richard N. Thomas, that the Board add to the agenda consideration of a request from Lawana Penton for the Board to waive the requirement of returning to service following sabbatical leave. Motion carried unanimously. President Barker stated this item would become Item #3.
It was moved by Susanne Jones, seconded by Bruce Brown, that the agenda, with additions, be accepted as the official agenda. Motion carried unanimously.
Agenda Item #2 - Consider a motion to employ a Principal for Franklinton Primary School for a 1-year period only.
Upon the recommendation of Superintendent Coleman, it was moved by Freddie Jefferson, seconded by Hayward Boone, that Dorothy Young be employed as Principal, Franklinton Primary School, for a 1-year period only. Motion carried unanimously.
Agenda Item #3 - Discuss and take appropriate action regarding employing an Assistant Principal for Franklinton Primary School for a 1-year period only.
Upon the recommendation of Superintendent Coleman, it was moved by Bruce Brown, seconded by Hayward Boone, that Brenda Fussell be employed as Assistant Principal for Franklinton Primary School for a 1-year period only. Motion carried unanimously.

It was moved by Hayward Boone, seconded by Richard N. Thomas, that the following item be added to the Personnel Adjustments: Transfer: Alice Terrell, Chapter I Tutor, Wesley Ray Elementary School, to Chapter I Tutor, Angie Jr. High School, effective the beginning of the 1995/96 school year; and that the school assignment for Aline Nelson, Chapter I Tutor, be changed to Wesley Ray Elementary School. Diane Caldwell, Chapter I Teacher, Franklinton Primary School, is requesting that the Board waive the requirement of returning to service following sabbatical leave. She has moved to Baton Rouge, LA, and the commute would be a hardship. (She was on sabbatical leave the entire 1995/96 school year.)
It was moved by Freddie Jefferson, seconded by Richard N. Thomas, that the Board honor requests from Diane Caldwell and Lawana Penton and waive the requirement of returning to service following sabbatical leave. Motion carried unanimously.
At the request of Anthony Triola, it was moved by Susanne Jones, seconded by Richard N. Thomas, that the Board add to the agenda the employment of four (4) bus operators. Motion carried .inanimously.

Thomas, that the Board advertise for the position of Teacher/Assistant Principal, Pine School, for a 1-year period (fill-in for Dorothy Young, who was employed as Principal, Franklinton Primary School, for a 1-year period). Agenda Item #6 - Consider a motion to approve extended employment for Joe Davis for painting work for the Special Education Department (50 hours imum at present rate of pay).
It was moved by Freddie Jefferson, seconded by Susanne Jones, that the Board approve extended employment for Joe Davis for painting work for the Special Education Department (50 hours maximum at present rate of pay). Motion carried unanimously.
Agenda Item #7 - Address by Ms. Stephanie Williams.
ins. Williams expressed concern regarding the selection process used for Demonette tryouts at Franklinton High School and the fact that no Blacks were selected for either the Demonette or cheerleader squad. Ms. Beverly Young, Franklinton High School Principal, was present and stated that all procedures set forth by Board policy were followed. President Barker asked Superintendent Coleman and staff to further investigate the matter and report back to the Board.
Agenda Item #8 - Consider request from Lawana Penton.
Considered under Agenda Item #5.
Superintendent Coleman requested that the Board grant permission for the purchase of some more air conditioners for the schools, totaling approximately $20,000, which would be taken out of next year's budget. It was moved by Susanne Jones, seconded by Holly James, that this item be added to the agenda. Motion carried unanimously. It was moved by Freddie Jefferson, seconded by Richard N. Thomas, that the Board authorize the purchase of air conditioners for schools at an approximate cost of $20,610, which will be taken from next fiscal year's budget. Motion carried unanimously.
At the request of Superintendent Coleman, Dale Varnado, Coordinator, Testing and Evaluation Program, gave a report on results of recent student testing and provided copies of complete test results for board members.
Agenda Item #9 - Consider a motion to enter into Executive Session for the purpose of the Superintendent's Evaluation.
It was moved by Richard N. Thomas, seconded by Karl Bickham, that the Board enter into Executive Session for the purpose of the Superintendent's Evaluation. Motion carried unanimously.
Agenda Item #10 - Consider a motion to return to special session.
It was moved by Harold Smith, seconded by Richard N. Thomas, that the Board return to special session. Motion carried unanimously.
