Franklinton, Louisiana

The Washington Parish School Board met in special session on the above date with the following members present: President Bob D. Bateman, Jimmie Corkern, John Dawsey, Jr., Harold Smith, Bringier H. Barker, Susanne Jones, Richard N. Thomas, and Elaine Whaley. Absent: None. The meeting was called to order by President Bateman. Invocation was given by Rev. Bruce Brown. President Bateman welcomed the news media, School Board Attorney Wayne Kuhn, Mrs. Gaye Hamilton, Reapportionment Consultant, and other guests.

 

Agenda Item 11 - Consider roof repair at Franklinton Elementary School

 

At the request of Superintendent Brown, it was moved by Jimmie Corkern, seconded by Harold Smith, that the Board declare an emergency and authorize the receiving of quotations for a new built-up roof for Franklinton Elementary School. Specifications will be mailed out to roofing contractors July 8, 1993, and quotations will be received until 12:00 Noon, July 16, 1993. Superintendent Brown will be authorized to open the quotations, review, and proceed with a contract with the low bidder. Authorization is given to transfer necessary funds from General Fund to Franklinton Elementary School's account to cover the cost of the roof, such funds to be repaid by Franklinton Elementary School. Motion carried unanimously.

 

Agenda Item 12 - Consider Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973

 

Dr. Guy V. Schilling, Assistant Superintendent, reviewed Act 504 as it relates to dyslexia and related disorders. Several board members had various concerns regarding the program to be used in the Washington Parish School System, and they addressed these concerns/questions to Dr. Schilling.

 

Agenda Item #3 - Consider reapportionment matters

 

President Bateman declared a recess, and board members (and guests) moved to the Media Center Auditorium where the Board, as a committee-of-the-whole, discussed various reapportionment plans/matters.

 

Upon re-convening, it was moved by Harold Smith, seconded by John Dawsey, that the Board adjourn. Motion carried unanimously.
