The Washington Parish School Board met in special session on the above date with the following members present: President Harold Smith, Jimmie Corkern, John Dawsey, Jr., Susanne Jones, Bringier H. Barker, Bob D. Bateman, and Richard N. Thomas. Absent: Joe Whaley. The meeting was called to order by President Smith. Invocation was given by John Dawsey. President Smith welcomed the news media, School Board Attorney Wayne Kuhn, and guests.
President Smith stated the purpose of the special meeting was to (1) Employ Teacher/Coach at Franklinton High School, and (2) Act on recommendation from selection committee for Coordinator/Resource Teacher for Dyslexia and Related Disorders.
Upon the recommendation of Principal Michael Henley and the administrative staff, it was moved by B. H. Barker, seconded by Bob Bateman, that the Board employ David Dunham as Special Education Teacher/Basketball Coach at Franklinton High School effective October 13, 1992. Motion carried unanimously.
It was moved by John Dawsey, seconded by B. H. Barker, that the Board grant a request by Ricky Payne, President, Washington Parish Association of Educators, to address the Board. Motion carried unanimously.
Mr. Payne stated that the teachers with whom he has been in contact would like to see, at this time, the duties of Coordinator/Resource Teacher for Dyslexia and Related Disorders given to a member of the central office staff, with that person's supervision of teachers duties distributed among the other staff members to alleviate some of the burden. This would be for this year only, then be ready to hire someone in this position, if needed, by the next school year. He urged the Board's consideration.
It was moved by B. H. Barker, seconded by Bob Bateman, that the Board open the envelope containing the recommendation of the selection committee for Coordinator/Resource Teacher for Dyslexia and Related Disorders. Motion carried unanimously. The committee's recommendation was Melanie Kennedy. The members of the out‑of‑parish selection committee were Alta B. Brown, William Wright, Jesse Perkins, and Susan Johnson. It was moved by B. H. Barker, seconded by Susanne Jones, that the Board accept the selection committee's recommendation and hire the recommended individual for the position of Coordinator/Resource Teacher for Dyslexia and Related Disorders for the balance of the school year. Motion carried unanimously.
On motion by B. H. Barker, seconded by Bob Bateman, and unanimously carried, the Board adjourned.
