The Washington Parish School Board met in regular session on the above date with the following members present: Dan Slocum, John Breland, Bruce Brown, John Wyble, Alan McCain, Matthew Tate, Dewitt Perry and Lesley McKinley.  Absent: Mary Adams.

 

Agenda Item #1 - Call to order

 

The meeting was called to order by President Alan McCain. 

 

Agenda Item #2- Invocation

 

The invocation was given by Bruce Brown.

 

Agenda Item #3 - Pledge of Allegiance

 

A reception was held before the Monday night committee meeting honoring the Washington Parish Reading Association and Title I Young Authors State Winners.  Mr. Fairburn recognized the Young Author’s as follows:

 

 

            Agenda Item #4 - Consider a motion to adopt the minutes of the April 21, 2011, regular board meeting (Alan McCain).

 

            It was moved by John Breland, seconded by Dan Slocum, that the Board adopt the minutes of the April 21, 2011, regular board meeting as submitted to each member.  Motion carried unanimously.

 

            Agenda Item #5 - Consider a motion to authorize advertisement for bids for the purchase of Bakery Products, Milk and Other Food and Non-Food Supplies for the School Lunch Program for the 2011/2012 school year (Marsha Newman).

 

            It was moved by Dan Slocum, seconded by Bruce Brown, that the Board authorize advertisement for bids for the purchase of Bakery Products, Milk and Other Food and Non-Food Supplies for the School Lunch Program for the 2011/2012 school year.  Motion carried unanimously.

 

            Agenda Item #6 - Consider a motion to adopt a Reading First Carryover Budget (Lacy Burris).

 

            It was moved by Matthew Tate, seconded by Dewitt Perry, that the Board adopt the Reading First Carryover Budget as presented to each member.  Motion carried unanimously.

 

            Agenda Item #7 - Consider a motion to authorize withdrawal privileges for Randy Branch, on all Varnado High School bank accounts effective June 1, 2011 and terminate withdrawal privileges for Emma Ross on all Varnado High School bank accounts effective June 1, 2011 (Darrell Fairburn).

 

            It was moved by John Wyble, seconded by Bruce Brown, that the Board authorize withdrawal privileges for Randy Branch, on all Varnado High School bank accounts effective June 1, 2011 and terminate withdrawal privileges for Emma Ross on all Varnado High School bank accounts effective June 1, 2011 (Darrell Fairburn).

 

            Agenda Item #8 - Discuss and take appropriate action regarding Personnel and Transportation Adjustments (Richard Kennedy).

 

            Upon the recommendation of Richard Kennedy, Personnel Director, it was moved by Matthew Tate, seconded by Bruce Brown, that the Board approve the personnel and transportation adjustments as follows:

            Franklinton High School:  Susan Thomas, Librarian, Retirement Resignation effective May 24, 2011.

            Mt. Hermon School:  Genevia Money, School Lunch Manager, Retirement Resignation effective August 31, 2011.

            Agenda Item #9 - Consider a motion to employ Personnel and Substitutes for the 2011/2012 school year (Richard Kennedy).

 

            It was moved by Matthew Tate, seconded by Bruce Brown, that the Board employ Personnel and Substitutes for the 2011/2012 school year.  Motion carried unanimously.  SEE ATTACHED.

 

            Agenda Item #10 - Superintendent’s Report

 

ADD TO THE AGENDA:  It was moved by Dan Slocum, seconded by Bruce Brown, that the Board consider a motion to advertise for the sale of a surplus modular building at Varnado High School.  Motion carried unanimously.

 

            It was moved by Dan Slocum, seconded by Dewitt Perry, that the Board authorize advertisement for the sale of a surplus modular building at Varnado High School.  Bids will be opened on May 25, 2011at 11:00 o’clock a.m., will be sold "as is" and has to be moved off property by May 31, 2011.  Motion carried unanimously.

 

ADD TO THE AGENDA:  It was moved by Bruce Brown, seconded by Lesley McKinley, to consider a motion to authorize advertisement for the sale of property at the old Franklinton football and baseball stadiums, old Pine School and Varnado Elementary School.  Motion carried unanimously.

 

            It was moved by Lesley McKinley, seconded by Dan Slocum, to authorize advertisement for the sale of property at the old Franklinton football and baseball stadiums, old Pine School and Varnado Elementary School.  Motion carried unanimously.

 

            Superintendent Fairburn gave an update on the Mt. Hermon and Varnado High School projects.

 

            All parish graduations are scheduled for next week.  FHS and VHS - Thursday, May 12th, Pine - Friday, May 13th and MHS - Saturday, May 14th.

 

            Agenda Item #11 - Other business from board members.

 

            John Wyble congratulates FHS golf, baseball and softball teams.

 

            Mr. Fairburn stated that Hunter Hale, Mt. Hermon School 10th grade student placed 1st in the state in golf.

 

            Pine is holding its 1st annual Golf tournament at Gemstone Golf Course this Saturday, May 7, 2011.

                It was moved by Bruce Brown, seconded by Dewitt Perry, that the Board adjourn.  Motion carried unanimously.
