The Washington Parish School Board met in regular session on the above date with the following members present: Dan Slocum, Linda Thomas, Mary Adams, Freddie Jefferson, Dewitt Perry, Alan McCain and Matthew Tate.  Absent:  Karl Bickham (sick) and Bruce Brown.

 

Agenda Item #1 - Call to order

 

The meeting was called to order by President Freddie Jefferson.  He welcomed School Board Attorney Wayne Kuhn, news media and guests.

           

Agenda Item #2 - Invocation

 

The invocation was given by Matthew Tate.

 

Agenda Item #3 - Pledge of Allegiance

 

Agenda Item #4 - Presentation on electronic classrooms (Charlotte Fasola).

 

Prior to the meeting, Ms. Donna Ponthieux, Franklinton Jr. High School Special Education Teacher, gave a presentation on Smart Board, an electronic classroom.

 

Agenda Item #5 - Consider a motion to adopt the minutes of the March 13, 2008, regular board meeting (Freddie Jefferson).

 

It was moved by Matthew Tate, seconded by Dewitt Perry, that the Board adopt the minutes of the March 13, 2008, regular board meeting as submitted to each member.   Motion carried unanimously.

 

Agenda Item #6 - Discuss and take appropriate action regarding moving the 6th grade at Enon Elementary School to Franklinton Jr. High School for the 2008/2009 school year (Darrell Fairburn).

 

It was moved by Dan Slocum, seconded by Dewitt Perry, that the Board postpone this agenda item until the May 8, 2008 board meeting.  Motion carried unanimously.

 

Agenda Item #7 - Discuss and take appropriate action regarding Title I allocations for the 2008/2009 fiscal year (T. J. Butler, Jr.).

 

It was moved by Dan Slocum, seconded by Dewitt Perry, that the Board approve the Title I allocations for the 2008/2009 fiscal year as follows:

It was moved by Dewitt Perry, seconded by Alan McCain, that the Board adopt revised Washington Parish School Board Policy File: IHC – Class Rankings.  Motion carried unanimously.

 

Agenda Item #9 - Discuss and take appropriate action regarding quotes received on surplus equipment for the school lunch program (Marsha Newman).

Agenda Item #10 - Consider a motion to ratify the Superintendent’s decision regarding property insurance (Beth Fussell).

 

It was moved by Matthew Tate, seconded by Alan McCain, that the Board ratify the Superintendent’s decision regarding property insurance.  Motion carried unanimously.

 

Agenda Item #11 - Consider a motion to adopt the Personnel and Transportation Adjustments (Richard Kennedy).

TRANSPORTATION ADJUSTMENTS

 

Angie District:                                                   Extend the route of Rena Knight 9 miles one way to pick up Tre’Veyin Stokes, Jaden Fornea, Jeanna Crain and Antonio Tynes.  Effective date:  April 1, 2008.

 

Franklinton District:                                            Deduct 7 miles one way from the route of Loretta Stafford.  Student no longer on route.  Effective date:  April 1, 2008.

 

Motion carried unanimously.

 

Agenda Item #12 - Superintendent’s Report

 

Trinity Insurance Services gave a status report on Workers Compensation.

 

It was moved by Linda Thomas, seconded by Alan McCain, that the Board Add to the Agenda:  Consider a motion to authorize advertisement for the sale of the old Franklinton High School Football and Baseball stadium and the old Pine School properties.  Motion carried unanimously.

It was moved by Matthew Tate, seconded by Dewitt Perry, that the Board approve the adjusted salary schedule for the transportation coordinator.  Motion carried unanimously.

 

It was moved by Matthew Tate, seconded by Dan Slocum, that the Board Add to the Agenda:  Discuss and take appropriate action regarding adjustments in Save Our Children Coordinator’s Salary. Motion carried unanimously.

 

It was moved by Matthew Tate, seconded by Dewitt Perry, that the Board approve the adjustment to the Save Our Children Coordinator’s Salary to $17.00 per hour to be paid by Save Our Children grant.  Motion carried unanimously.

 

Sam Fauntleroy, Architect, gave an update on all projects.

 

Wayne Kuhn, Attorney, gave a report on the litigation with Brunt Construction.

 

Superintendent Fairburn stated that the Washington Parish School System signed a contract this week with the Big Brother/Big Sister organization. 

 

Mt. Hermon School is going through a SACS review this week.  The report will be given on Friday, April 18, 2008 at 2:30 p.m.

 

Agenda Item #13 - Other business from board members.

 

The Board thanked Ms. Pauline Bankston and her staff for their hospitality.

 

Dan Slocum congratulated the Mt. Hermon girl’s softball team for making it to the 1st round of playoffs.
