The Washington Parish School Board met in regular session on the above date with the following members present: Richard Thomas, Jr., Dan Slocum, Karl Bickham, Hayward Boone, Susanne Jones, Matthew Tate and Freddie Jefferson.  Absent: Bruce Brown and Holly James.

 

Agenda Item #1 - Call to order

 

The meeting was called to order by President Richard Thomas, Jr.  He welcomed School Board Attorney Wayne Kuhn, news media and guests.

 

Agenda Item #2 - Invocation

 

The invocation was given by Matthew Tate.

 

Agenda Item #3 - Pledge of Allegiance

 

Agenda Item #4 - Consider a motion to adopt the minutes of the May 13, 2004, regular board meeting.

 

It was moved by Matthew Tate, seconded by Karl Bickham, that the Board adopt the minutes of the May 13, 2004, regular board meeting as submitted to each Board member.  Motion carried unanimously.

 

Agenda Item #5 - Consider a motion to adopt the minutes of the May 24, 2004, special board meeting.

 

It was moved by Susanne Jones, seconded by Hayward Boone, that the Board adopt the minutes of the May 24, 2004, special board meeting as submitted to each Board member.  Motion carried unanimously.

 

Agenda Item #6 - Consider a motion to appoint The Era Leader as the Official Journal for the period beginning July 1, 2004 and ending June 30, 2005 (Dennie Fowler).

 

It was moved by Matthew Tate, seconded by Susanne Jones, that the Board appoint The Era Leader as the Official Journal for the period beginning July 1, 2004 and ending June 30, 2005.  Motion carried unanimously. 

 

Agenda Item #7 - Discuss and take appropriate action regarding bids received for the purchase of School Supplies for the 2004/2005 school year (Beth Fussell).

 

Following review and recommendation by Beth Fussell, Director of Finance, it was moved by Hayward Boone, seconded by Dan Slocum, that the board award contracts for the purchase of school supplies for the 2004/2005 school year as follows: Tri-Star Marketing, Lafayette, LA - $19,545.77; Venable Office Supplies, Amite, LA - $1,165.44 and Quill Corporation, Palatine, IL - $1,270.08.  Motion carried unanimously.

 

Agenda Item #8 - Discuss and take appropriate action regarding Student Accident Insurance coverage for the 2004/2005 school year (Beth Fussell).

 

Beth Fussell, Director of Finance, reviewed the recommendation from Norris Insurance Consultants for the placement of student accident insurance for the 2004/2005 school year.  Upon the recommendation of John Norris, the board=s insurance consultant, it was moved by Dan Slocum, seconded by Matthew Tate, that ICT Insurance, 405 E. St. Peter St., New Iberia, LA, be awarded the contract for the following student accident insurance coverage for a one-year period effective August 1, 2004 - August 1, 2005:

Catastrophic Insurance                           $  2,675.00

 

Motion carried unanimously.

 

Agenda Item #9 - Discuss and take appropriate action regarding bids received for the purchase of Bakery and Milk Products for the School Lunch Program for the 2004/2005 school year (Marsha Newman).

 

Superintendent Dennie Fowler, in the absence of Marsha Newman, School Food Service Supervisor, presented bakery and milk products bid tabulations to the Board, as follows:

It was moved by Freddie Jefferson, seconded by Susanne Jones, that the Board accept the recommendation of Marsha Newman, School Food Service Supervisor, and award the bids to Interstate Brands Corporation/Cotton Holsum Bakery for the Bakery Products and Brown's Dairy - firm pricing for the Milk Products for the School Lunch Program for the 2004/2005 school year.  Motion carried unanimously.

 

Agenda Item #10 - Discuss and take appropriate action regarding Personnel and Transportation Adjustments (Richard Kennedy).

 

Upon the recommendation of Richard Kennedy, Personnel Director, it was moved by Karl Bickham, seconded by Matthew Tate, that the Board approve the following Personnel and Transportation Adjustments:

Agenda Item #11 - Superintendent's Report

 

Superintendent Fowler stated that there would be a reception for Retiree's  on June 10, 2004 at 5:30 P.M. in the Media Center.

 

Melanie Kennedy gave a presentation on Reading First.  She invited Board members to a Leadership Meeting on July 8, 2004. 

 

Richard Kennedy gave an overview of summer school.  Summer school will be held at Angie Jr. High School, Pine High School and Franklinton High School.  Board members requested to place the summer school schedule in the newspaper.

 

Beth Fussell, Finance Director, gave the Board members a worker=s compensation handout.

 

Agenda Item #12 - Other business from board members.

 

Hayward Boone commended Melanie Kennedy on the Reading First Grant money.
